The Secret Garden took me by surprise! I never knew its premise, but a couple of people had highly recommended it, so I decided it might be the perfect spring novel to end our school year with.
It is the perfect mix of Gothic and Romantic literature. The main characters, Mary and Colin, are born into isolation and neglect and are insufferable because of it. Handed off to helpers who initially resent raising them, they must figure out how to survive. Through the garden, they find redemption and faith.
There are many themes and symbols to explore: decay, death, nature, and friendship.
I've created an online digital packet where students can answer questions about each week's assigned chapters. Other fun activities include planning a picnic and planting a garden.
